Phonics

Our Phonics Curriculum

Our intention for our phonics curriculum is to deliver high quality sessions composed of the understanding of letters and sounds, aligned with the bug club reading scheme. We aim to equip our children with the knowledge and skills needed to read and write; enabling them to enjoy reading as a life-long skill.

We want our children to engage with reading from an early age and apply their phonics skills in a range of ways. We want children to feel able to read with confidence, to enjoy being read to and develop a love for reading.

We make every effort to ensure all of our children have access to reading across all areas of the curriculum and that opportunities are provided for the retrieval and rehearsal of reading skills.

How we Teach Phonics:

At Acacia Nursery we teach phonics daily. Children will experience phase 1 activities to support their early phonic awareness and communication and language development. Phases 2 and 3 will be taught as and when children are ready, based on our formative and summative assessments.

Acacia Nursery follows the Primary National Strategy 'Letters and Sounds' Principles for teaching high quality phonics. Please find the full document here.

Phase 2 Letter sounds are taught in the following letter progression sequence:

Set 1: s a t p

Set 2: i n m d

Set 3: g o c k

Set 4: ck e u r

Set 5: h b f (ff) l (ll) ss
